Teach young people how to fly fish with a comprehensive yet easy-to-learn "in school" program.

  • Impress the importance of stewardship and conservation for our natural resources.

  • Expose students to a lifetime outdoor skill that is neither gender specific, nor restricted to entry by ethnicity or physical ability.

  • Introduce an outdoor activity as an “in school” program, to both male and female, providing a foundation that leads to outdoor participation.

  • Excite students to learn more about flyfishing so they gain additional knowledge and skills in the broader areas of:

    • Being outdoors

    • Going fishing

    • Aquatic entomology

    • Conservation and resource protection

    • “Leave no trace” ethics

    • Freshwater ecology

    • Wildlife biology

    • Tying knots

    • Tying flies

  •  Improve student values/performance in the areas of:

    • Grades

    • Self esteem

    • Self confidence

    • Patience

    • “Stick-to-it-tiveness”

    • Motivation

    • Interpersonal relations

    • Behavior

    • Concentration and focus

  • Student knowledge and skill gain is assessed at the conclusion of each unit by the teacher via an objective measurement, both written and practical, of each student’s individual flycasting ability and understanding in the areas of:

    • Casting accuracy, distance and knowledge of casting principles

    • Fish species, food sources, flies used to imitate, for both fresh and saltwater

    • Conservation/environment/resource ethics

    • Outdoor fly fishing tactics

    • Assimilation of the results of these ongoing assessments results in teacher-driven improvements to the national program.
